Exhibition Proposals

Objectspace is an Auckland public gallery dedicated to positioning making in the fields of craft, applied arts and design, within a range of cultural, economic and social frameworks, in order to provoke new assessments about works and practices.

Objectspace’s programme of curated exhibitions, events, publications and partnerships creates; new opportunities for outstanding practitioners, critical discourse and professional development, a sector hub that enhances its national and international profile, and connections between makers, writers, collectors & supporters.

Objectspace presents exhibitions of craft, design and the applied arts in three exhibition spaces.

  • The Main Gallery presents curated exhibitions of contemporary practice.
  • The Window Gallery predominantly presents smaller installations of contemporary practice by individual makers.
  • The Vault presents selections of contemporary and historical works held in private collections.

Objectspace welcomes exhibition concepts and proposals for consideration, particularly for the Window Gallery. Objectspace’s exhibition programme is developed from both received proposals and exhibition concepts developed internally.

Objectspace is interested in receiving exhibition proposals from all practitioners, including makers, curators, exhibition designers and writers.

Exhibition proposals can be submitted to Objectspace at any time. Objectspace staff and external specialist advisors will assess the merit of all exhibition proposals. Decisions are made both on the basis of the quality of the submission, and its appropriateness for inclusion considering the overall balance and interests of the Objectspace Programme.

The Window Gallery:

The Window Gallery programme focuses predominantly on solo makers’ small, engaging and innovative installations of contemporary work which have not previously been exhibited in Auckland. Proposals should have a rationale and be for a complete installation, rather than for individual works. It is worthwhile to consider this unique space – visible from both the street and the gallery – and propose work to be exhibited in light of this, considering why your work would be a suitable fit for Objectspace considering its purpose:

The Window Gallery operates on a very slim budget. Installation is taken care of by Objectspace staff and exhibitors. Makers generally need to arrange the freight of their work to and from Objectspace.

The Window Gallery measures 3 × 3.5 meters, facing out to busy Ponsonby Road. It is lit at night, and is viewable as a 24-hour exhibition space. The Window Gallery has track lighting and power outlets.

The dimensions of the glass window pane are 1900mm high x 1200 mm wide, with the distance from the floor to the window’s lower ledge measuring 580mm high. The dimensions of the main wall facing out to the window and the street are 2060mm high x 3400mm wide. The height from the floor to the lighting track in the Window Gallery is 3650mm.
