Peter Haythornthwaite has to be viewed as a New Zealand design pioneer. Whether it be medicine, science, art, manufacturing or domestic fields, in todays parlance, much of what he achieved can be described as 'design-led'. In 2016 Peter was handed a Queens Birthday Honours medal for his services to Design over the last 40 years.

Michael Barrett is a freelance writer and editor specialising in architecture and design.
