Dorset button workshop with Steven Junil Park 박준일

Join Ōtautahi-based artist Steven Junil Park for a morning of needle-work.

In this workshop, participants will learn the craft of making a dorset button using linen or cotton thread. A dorset button is a style of hand-made button covered in embroidery stitches originating in the English county of Dorset. Their manufacture peaked between 1622 and 1850, after which they were overtaken by machine-made buttons. Dorset buttons can be used on garments but can also be made into jewellery, magnets, hair accessories or used for accents on quilts or textile artworks. Traditionally they were made using a ring of metal as a base but Steven will share a method that uses only thread.

Steven Junil Park is a Korean-born multi-disciplinary artist based in Ōtautahi. He is known for his work under the name 6x4 where he produces all manner of functional objects from recycled, repurposed, or vintage materials, focusing on the medium of clothing to address questions of identity and place. His practice is heavily process based, where materials come alive while being worked to create a language for communion with the intangible. He is a strong believer in the power of craft, where the transformation of materials from one state to another can double as a powerful way to transform the inner self.
