Hear from Dr Bobby Luke in this textile focused Ockham Lecture titled Rongo-ā-Whare: Pacifist traditions through the intersections of Rematriation, Re-indigenisation and Design.

This lecture explores design through the intersections of pacifist attitudes and the embodiment of matrilineal communities seeking to introduce radical politics centred in the Role of Rongo. Bobby Luke will explore an interdisciplinary art and design response through two major projects, Hou Rongo: the Breath of Rongo (2021) and Ngakau Mahaki (2023).

Bobby Luke (Ngati Ruanui, Taranaki) is a prac-ademic who works at the intersection of academic research and creative practice. He is currently contributing to the Fashion Department in Auckland University of Technology's School of Visual Arts and Design. Dr. Luke sees practice-led research as a means of exploring new and innovative approaches to design, methodology and creative impact. Dr. Luke is not impartial or apologetic about the promotion of kaupapa Māori led design and aims promote a greater understanding of Indigenous design culture, and to challenge the dominance of Western design paradigms and pedagogy. He has his own clothing label, Campbell Luke – which, alongside garment design and production, traverses practices of moving image and photography as a means to visually communicate and disseminate research.

The Ockham Lecture series is an annual programme of lectures and panel discussions across different themes that critically engage with craft, design and architecture. This programme is supported by Objectspace's Lead Partner Ockham Residential.
