For this special opening event for the Pohewa Pāhewa Māori Design Symposium, the programmes curatorial rōpū – Graham Tipene, Desna Whaanga-Schollum, Johnson Witehira and Tyrone Ohia – will share the stage with Bernard Makoare to offer thoughts on how their individual practices have unfolded, and insights into their collaboration towards Objectspace's ongoing Māori design kaupapa.

Their contributions to design within te ao Māori have been wide reaching and show the multitudes of practice in contemporary Māori design.

Bernard Makoare offered the name of this kaupapa, Pohewa Pāhewa, on the occasion of the first exhibition in 2023. His insights into design practice have been invaluable in the shaping of the kaupapa.

Join as as we celebrate and warm the space for our inaugural Māori Design Symposium, we'd love to have you with us.

This evening lecture takes place on Thursday 5 September before the full-day Pohewa Pāhewa Māori Design Symposium on Friday 6 September. Get tickets to the symposium here.

All symposium ticket holders will be added to the door list for this special Ockham Lecture. If you're unable to join us for the full-day symposium on Friday but would like to attend this lecture, register here.

The Ockham Lecture series is an annual programme of lectures and panel discussions across different themes that critically engage with craft, design and architecture. This programme is supported by Objectspace's Lead Partner Ockham Residential.
