Ockham Lecture: Towards an Auckland Aesthetic with Tania Wong

This event is now fully booked. Email to be added to our wait list.

For this very special Ockham Lecture we’ll be venturing out of Objectspace for the first time, but we won’t be going far. Our Lead Partners, Ockham Residential, have very conveniently completed a signature building barely 100m away, and we’re decamping there for the evening.

The Greenhouse on Williamson Ave is an ambitious building filled with bespoke design elements inspired by the flora, fauna and whenua of Tāmaki Makaurau. Ockham’s Head of Architecture Tania Wong will discuss the ways in which collaborations with makers, artists and iwi partners can lead to the creation of buildings which take note of the local environment and create an architectural identity which is unique to the places they inhabit.

After the talk there will be the opportunity to tour parts of the building including some of the apartments.

Tania Wong was born in Tāmaki Makaurau, and her story is a very Auckland one. Her ancestry includes some of Aotearoa’s earliest Chinese settlers, originating from Guangdong. Her family story includes market gardeners in South Auckland and fruiterers in Karangahāpe Road, while she herself was raised in Avondale, on the fringes of West Auckland. Tania gained her Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Auckland and subsequently worked on industrial and commercial projects in Toronto, London and Tāmaki Makaurau. Since its founding 14 years ago, she has been Head of Architecture at Ockham Residential, focused on the design of medium-density residential apartment buildings, many of these built on brownfield sites within central Auckland.

The Ockham Lecture series is an annual programme of lectures and panel discussions across different themes that critically engage with craft, design and architecture. This programme is supported by Objectspace's Lead Partner Ockham Residential.
