TDC returns for 2024 with a message: ‘Type speaks’. Designers capture the zeitgeist of contemporary culture through typographic language.
The annual Type Directors Club awards recognises design excellence and typographic innovation, with the exhibition traveling to cities across the Americas, Asia and Europe and to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 2024 thanks to creative agency Osborne Shiwan.
Work by 202 winners were selected from over 1,500 entries by a diverse jury of leading designers and type designers for TDC69. This reflects TDC’s ongoing commitment to increase the level of diversity and representation in all aspects of its programming and membership.
Hosted by Objectspace and sponsored by Osborne Shiwan and Klim Type Foundry, TDC69 Aotearoa brings together hundreds of pieces from entrants including Apple, Collins, Designworks, Fons Hickmann, Google, Monolith, MorcosKey, Practise, Seven, Studio Dumbar and Wolff Olins.
Alongside a sample of the best of international type design, this TDC exhibition includes shortlisted entries into the Aotearoa typography competition Type Here, and winning work from TDC Young Ones – Auckland University of Technology student Abbey Barlow’s ‘AB3D’ project.

Founded in 1946 by the industry’s leading design practitioners, the Type Directors Club, based in New York, is an international organisation whose purpose is to build a creative community through public events and platforms, support the growth of students and early-career professionals, and recognise excellence in type design across the world.
Founded in 2006, Osborne Shiwan is an Auckland-based creative agency specialising in strategic thinking and art direction. Directors Lloyd Osborne and Shabnam Shiwan have collaborated with some of New Zealand’s most influential brands and their work has been recognised internationally within the areas of commerce, arts and culture. They manage the Aotearoa arm of Type Directors Club and in 2024 launched Type Here, an Aotearoa typography competition focussed on contemporary and expressive typography.
